Carmel Said (b. 1950) is a Maltese artist living in London and former pupil of George Fenech, who has spent over five decades producing award winning scenic art for commercials, television and film. This exhibition presents a small selection of his personal artworks, shown in his home island for the first time.

The Festa pieces represent a ubiquitous aspect of Maltese life - the village feast - in garish, exaggerated colours; the chaotic crowd becoming a living entity in its own right, composed of diverse and often opposing individual elements.

All the pieces in Parade stem from Said’s practice of unconscious sketching done over the last decade of his career. Often, the same composition or theme will recur in multiple sketches of minor variation before evolving into a quickly realised sculpture or painting. This way of working reflects the tension between Said’s nostalgia for a childhood home preserved in memory and a distant, evolving homeland shaped by modern geopolitics; one which he examines to reflect broader, universal truths.
